Yes, you are right. It is expressed as 21k euro, not krona.
Cannot trace the link at the moment. Its on one of the UK newspaper's online section. The £96 figure doesnt apply. However, the 3.5 million ISK does, which will in due course buy you...er, prob £96 if you are lucky. I'll search for the link, its most important news, this.

Here's the link from Citywire. Hidden in Moday's emergency legislation, the Iceland Govt. has decided to protect itself by reimbursing UK savers in near- worthless krona. This is a scandal.

Any ideas why I can open a savings account at heritable bank on its website when it is part of Landsbanki. Not that I'm planning to. Just thought I would see how far through the application process I get. Obviously stopped when it wanted details of the account I was going to fund it from.

Apparently the Icelandic compensation scheme us to default on its committments to me the first EUR20k but Mr Darling will announce later this afternoon that the UK scheme will step in and pay it and then go after the Icelandic government for the cash.

    Good news.

From all I was reading yesterday it was looking very likely that the Icelandic Government was not going to pay out there guarantees to UK savers.

Looks like there were fairly blunt about it

"The Icelandic government, believe it or not, have told me yesterday they have no intention of honouring their obligations here," said Mr Darling.

Hard so see how Iceland is going to survive through this other than turning to Russia for more help than they are already looking for.

Who's going to trust anything Icelandic after this fiasco? Never mind the banks - it looks as if you can't even trust the country itself. Cod wars come to mind.

Things move fast. All Kaupthing Edge savings accounts have now been sold off to ING, the big Dutch financial institution.
