Interesting who the buyer will be. Sainsbury's and ASDA are also both interested in Safeway.

Theres always Somerfield waiting to be swallowed up too.

Analyst from the share centre today said that Tesco shares will be the biggest winner at the close of business at the end of 2003.

Tesco currently have a 27% stake in the supermarket sector.

Morrisons, want the safeway stores in the south as they are already well edstablised in the north, and they will sell-off stores in the north.Safeway head office in Hayes will close, and management transfered to Bradford (big cost saving) if they get passed passport control.
IMO this will be the last big deal before Ken Morrisson leave,s the company and will sell a large block of his 30% holding,so keep a eye on the share price and sell if in profit, just my opinion.

ps Rumour has it that ceo Carlos Perez was locked in his office and phones disconnected so he couldn,t bla bla bla.

As a Safeway shareholder in the past, I would certainly have not been satisfied with this deal!

Not well edstablished in the East though.
I haven't seen a Safeway around here and its only recently a Morrisons store popped up in Camborne (slightly west of Cambridge). Theres one other in Norwich. An ADSA store has also recently popped up in central Cambridge.

Still mainly Tesco and Sainsbury's that dominate this area.

It's not a done deal yet and I would be surprised if there wasn't a counter bid in the coming days. I would guess that some Board Rooms have been very busy this weekend.

Yes - Sainsburys. I don't think they'll get it - but they'll push the price up for Morrisons, which may be all they hope to do anyway.
