Also, while i'm on the subject of software.. I have a couple more suggestions for your list, firstly True Launch Bar

    http://www.truelaunchbar.com

It does lots of stuff, but the basic advantage is it lets you put nested menus in your quicklaunch bar. I've been using it for years, and couldn't live without it any more.. No more digging through a messy 'all programs' menu that's already two clicks away..

I'm not sure if it counts as 'must have' software tho ;)

    And..

    http://www.mailinator.com/

Is an extremely useful site. It's basically a system that lets invent random email addresses for those pesky sites that demand them, and can then go and grab the email from the site, So if you're signing up for something, you can enter somerandomness@mailinator.com and go grab the mail for it at: http://www.mailinator.com/mailinator...somerandomness

Thanks for the tip - I have been a Zone Alarm user for a few years now, but have changed to Sygate. It is so much easier to use - you can see the programs that have been "allowed" access which is nice.

    Anyone else thinking about it:

My favourite pdf creator is pdf995. You do get a long splash screen on the free version, but it works very well and integrates with MS Office.

One of the reasons I like it is because you can team it with PdfEdit995, which allows you to, well, edit pdfs. I mainly use it for stitching pages from different pdfs together to make a new file.

There is also Signature995, which adds security controls.

Discovered this little gem today "CCleaner" or crap cleaner as it's known from www.ccleaner.com

It's a Windows washer, Disk Cleaner, Reg. Cleaner and more in one nice neat little package. Its astonishingly fast also.

There is n't a category for it in the first post of the thread but IMHO definately a must have.

This brief list was essentially set up for new computer users for those must have software titles.

    eg. firewall, anti virus etc.

The idea being to keep it fairly short.

A list of freeware titles has appeared in the freebies section and is available at

i think zonealarm is the best one out there it covers everything from spyware to viruses. I haven't had any problems with ZA at all but when i had norton installed it caused me nothing but probems.
Things like norton anti virus can't fix this please reinstall norton. about once a week, my norton ghost kept crashing my comp so i had to keep restoring my comp.
