Picasso recommends this one and it does get some decent reviews.

Please PM me any additions to this list, therefore saving trawling through loads of entries on the thread

One of these days I'll go alphabetical !

This brief list was essentially set up for new computer users for those must have software titles.

    eg. firewall, anti virus etc.

The idea being to keep it fairly short.

A list of freeware titles has appeared in the freebies section and is available at

I'd remove Zonealarm from the list, it does the job but is also 'Spyware'

I've read this about Zone alarm before in the last day or so.
I run Zone Alarm Pro does that have spyware as well?

I run Adware, Spybot daily and SpywareBlaster continuously.
Surely they would highlight any probs with ZA? Wouldn't they?

    Can someone please clarify.

I had problems with Zone Alarm, and it prevented me from accessing some sites, until I uninstalled it (on the advice of my ISP tech line). Some people have problems, others don't; but I run McAfee now, no problems.

I ditched Zone Alarm some time ago because of problems and now use Sygate which has performed brilliantly, so far!

I still use Zonealarm Pro, it came with my router.

Rightly or wrongly on download.com its the most popular firewall.
I've also put the free sysgate one on a friends machine and that did appear more user friendly to me.

If any of the anti spyware detect anything I'll probably change but I have no proof as yet.

Winamp has a new release - 5.04 - the first in years!

Now included ripping and burning feature...

Yesterday 09/08 Lavasoft released a new version of its Ad-Aware programme called Ad-Aware Personal SE.

Can be downloaded via www.lavasoft.de (click on download in support section)

It is recommended to uninstall old versions of Ad-aware prior to downloading SE edition (supposed to make download and installation easier).
