Dell charging problem - poweradapter wont work - PLEASE HELP

my old battery and power adapter stopped working, so i bought new ones
the new battery works fine, but the power adapter only worked for a day, i tried to plug the old power adapter in yesterday and it worked for a few hours but now its dead again
my laptops out of charge and none of the power adapters work,
i know the fuse hasnt gone in the plug because we have another laptop which the power adapter for that one worked perfectly!
i tried using the plug & cord from the other laptop for my power adapters and both of them still didnt light up

does anyone know why this is??
what do i need to do??

What happens if you take the battery off and run from the mains lead only. Does it work then.

That you need BOTH a new adaptor and battery suggests something else is the problem. It is that the hardware on the laptop is misreading the battery charge situation? You can check this by disconnecting the battery as tomcat suggests

if it does not work without the battery in then its an i, prob looking at mainboard. you may be lucky and it may be the charging port that need re-soldering.

I am using HP laptop model name compac6910p from the last six months.When i purchase it does not work properly.Some time it charge proper and some time it does not charge.What can be recommended?
