Query on XPS 8100 vs Inspiron 580

    Hi all,

I am looking to replace my 8-year old Dell with a newer version, and have come down to a couple of choices:

    Inspiron 580 (key components below)

    CPU: Intel® Core™ i5 Processor 750 (2.66GHz, 8MB)
    Graphics: ATI Radeon™ HD 5450 1GB DDR3 graphics
    Memory: 6144MB Dual Channel DDR3 1333MHz [3x2048] Memory
Hard Drive: 1TB (7200rpm) SATA Hard Drive

    vs

    XPS 8100 (key components below)

    CPU: Intel Core i5 Processor 650 (3.20GHz, 4MB)
Graphics: Single 1GB Nvidia GeForce GTS 240
    Memory: 6144MB (2x2GB) (2x1GB)1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel Memory
    Hard Drive: 1.2TB Dual Hard Drive Raid 0 "Stripe" (2x640GB - 7200rpm)

Both are near enough the same price (XPS is £50 more expensive) but I am wondering what you think. My key questions are:

    - which CPU would perform better based on an 'average' user?
    - I am assuming the XPS is a better machine given the Dell marketing machine, but is that right?

Really grateful for any advice, and thanks in advance,

    JW

The inspiron has a better CPU as it's quad core and not a dual core like the XPS.

However, the XPS has a better graphics card and the fact that there are two hard drives in raid 0 should mean that it's faster when it comes to booting up and accessing data. Although with two disks in this setup, you are doubling the risk of failure because if one drive fails, you lose the data on both.

If you are looking to use this for gaming, you should look for one with a better graphics card. But if you are looking for something like an office PC, you don't need something with this spec.
