Why are people buying these?

Just get yourself over to ebay and buy a nice IBM x40.

You'll get luxuries like a proper screen, usable keybaord, hard disk etc.

The original version of the eeepc had two things going for it - it was very light (much, much lighter than an x40) and very cheap. This one's not so cheap, but the weight is right.
