You can get that stand for £50 from eBay? I'd like to see you provide a link.

That is true, but I have the PX70 stand and it just looks so nice as a matching set. VERY sleek.

It's also not 720p.

It's 1024*720. 720p is 1280*720. It'll downscale proper 720p content. I'd expect better for £700 to be honest.

Even if that's true, are you really going to notice this? From the reviews, clearly not:

Panasonic has created a great TV in the shape of the TH-37PX70. It may not have Full HD credentials, but the price / performance ratio is staggeringly good. If you’re looking to buy your first HDTV and don’t want anything too big, this Viera will provide you with excellent picture quality at a very attractive price.

I'm sure it's a good telly, but it's not 720p, that's all I was saying. It's got 20% less pixels than a proper 720p set. That's a significant amount.

For £700 you could get a proper 720p set that won't downsize/squash/add borders to your skyHD/Console/PC.

it's a plasma

they don't have square pixels so it's not the same issues as with an LCD

many 720p plasmas are 1024x1024 res.

Ok, so it won't add border or display in the wrong aspect ratio, but it will downsize.

And no 720p plasmas are 1024*1024 since it's impossible to display 720p unless you've got a resolution of 1280*720 as a minimum.

Any manufacturer claiming their set is 720p without having the necessary resolution is plain lying.

no they are not

not if the pixels are rectangular and it doesn't do 1:1 mapping, as most plasmas.

as long as the vertical height is > 720p it will be able to display 720p correctly with 1024 plasma pixels wide.
